Principles of molecular distillation

Molecular distillation is a special liquid-liquid separation technology. It is different from traditional distillation that relies on the boiling point difference separation principle. Instead, it relies on the difference in the mean free path of the molecules of different substances to achieve separation. Here, the free path of molecular motion (represented by λ) refers to the distance traveled by a molecule between two adjacent collisions.

The liquid mixture flows along the heating plate and is heated. Light and heavy molecules will escape from the liquid surface and enter the gas phase. Since the free paths of light and heavy molecules are different, molecules of different substances will move different distances after escaping from the liquid surface. If a condensation plate can be properly set up, the light molecules will reach the condensation plate and be condensed and discharged, while the heavy molecules that cannot reach the condensation plate will be discharged along the mixed liquid. In this way, the purpose of material separation is achieved.

1. Low operating temperature (much lower than the boiling point), high vacuum degree (no load ≤1Pa), short heating time (in seconds), high separation efficiency, etc., especially suitable for the separation of high boiling point, heat-sensitive, and easily oxidized substances;

2. It can effectively remove low molecular substances (deodorization), heavy molecular substances (decolorization) and remove impurities in the mixture;

3. The separation process is a physical separation process, which can well protect the separated substances from contamination, especially maintaining the original quality of natural extracts;

4. The degree of separation is high, higher than traditional distillation and ordinary thin film evaporators.
